Chapter 55. France
Mia smiled, reassuring me. But I saw the fear in her eyes.
I know why, and it’s because they’ll scold her for what she did.
“I told you, don’t worry about me. I can handle myself,” Mia spoke again upon seeing that I’m spacing out. “River’s here. Go now before Hans’ guards catch you!”
I looked on the other side, and I saw River approaching.
“Thank you for helping us,” River said as he held my hand, looking at Mia. “I promise that I’ll return the favor.”
But Mia shook her head.
“Just protect her and make her happy. That will be enough,” she answered, her gaze now moving at me.
Tears were streaming down her face.
“Live your life now. That’s my only wish.”
Smiling as I bit my lower lip to stop my sobs, I nodded.
With River holding my hand, both of us ran outside the hall. There was another gate we needed to cross, and once we passed that, everything was over.
