Of course it could.

I looked away.

For one stupid second, I had still hoped he would say the timing was wrong. That there was some obvious reason the baby couldn't be his.

But there wasn't.

He had been with Sloane before my birthday.

Before Diana woke.

Before he knew I was his mate.

I understood that.

It didn't make it hurt less.

Kade stayed near the door.

“She and I were over before tonight,” he said quietly. “That hasn't changed.”

“I know.”

“If there is a baby, I'll take responsibility.”

“You should.”

“The child would be innocent.”

“I know that too.”

My voice cracked slightly.

I hated it.

Kade took a careful step toward me.

“Abby.”

I wrapped my arms around myself.
