Chapter 56. On My Side
Calla wished the grounds would just open and swallow her. Her knees were already giving in even before hearing what Rico had to say.
Valentina said something to him. She’d planted a seed of distrust for him to suspect her, that’s for sure. That’s why he called her here, to find out if it’s true. Or maybe, he’s already figured things out and is trying to test her. She knew she couldn’t fool him forever.
“And what did she say?” She tried not to sound frightened, but her voice came out low and in a whisper.
Rico traced the edge of the desk, slowly with his fingers then placed the bottle of alcohol on the desk and walked over to where she stood.
Her breath hitched and she tried to move backwards, but it was like her feet were glued to the floor. Her heart was hammering in her chest.
She stared up at him as he reached her, his fingers slowly inching up to touch her hair. She quickly shut her eyes, holding her breath to try not to breathe funny.
