Author’s POV

“Vera?” Jackson called out worriedly as he caught her just before she crumpled to the floor. He gathered her into his arms, cradling her against his chest. “I’m sorry... Look at me.”

Her lashes fluttered weakly as she raised her head. With blurred vision and a faint smile, she reached out to touch his cheek.

“If I don’t die in your hands, then I’ll live a long life,” she whispered, then her hand slipped limply down to her stomach as she lost consciousness again.

Jackson’s breath hitched. “How dare you smile and crack such a joke in this condition?” His voice cracked as he held her tighter, eyes squeezed shut to fight off the sting of tears.

Without wasting a second, he carried her into his office and called Mrs. Briggs. “I need a female doctor. Now. No one is allowed into my office. Also, get me some clothes that would fit Miss Vera. That’s all. Bye.”

He ended the call and rushed to change before the doctor arrived.
