Chapter 29

Jackson's POV

I didn’t sleep a wink all night. After she slammed the door in my face, furious and hurt, I walked numbly into my room and locked the door… Monica could knock all she wanted, but I wasn't letting her in. Not anymore.

When the house finally fell silent and I was sure everyone had gone back to bed, I grabbed my keys and stepped out for coffee even though it was still dark. The cold early morning air didn’t do much to clear my head, but the bitterness of the brew gave me something to focus on. Once back home, I locked myself in my home office and powered on the desktop.

I buried myself in work, trying to revive my company, trying to make sense of the mess I’d made. Helping Vera had somehow become more important than anything else, and yet she kept pushing me away like I was the very thing poisoning her peace. And maybe I was.

Still, none of this would’ve happened if I had just changed the code to my safe after Monica left. Stupid m
