It was intended as a clever way of checking whether there would be any desire in the old farmer for Benjamin to abandon the law, and return to his father's primitive labor. Nathan dared to hope for it now, for his son had not gained as much from his profession as he said. Because of his need to be attached to the farm, the money stock, and a clean wife also ready and at hand, Nathan could safely fend for himself in his hottest moments without needing to chastise his son with the hard-earned hundreds spent on his education.
