Ryder didn’t show it if he was jealous of the new guy’s gaze on me.

Or perhaps he did—by avoiding eye contact with me.

He had mastered this particular form of silence in recent days. I still couldn’t believe it was the same Ryder that had shifted and let me ride on his back.

In the hallways we shared every morning, he had mastered this

art of making me feel like a ghost. This was how things had been for days and my heart kept breaking whenever he did this.

There was an oppressive quiet that followed me everywhere.

His deep brown eyes did not even show the glimmer of recognition when we unintentionally locked gazes across the hallway. There was nothing there.
