“We will not discuss this in public.” Father scowls at the chaos of the crowd then turns and storms out.
Like a dog on a fucking leash, I chase after him with the rest of the Snowcrest delegates. My ears are ringing, my heart’s damn near pounded itself to mush against my ribcage, and my eyes burn from a night spent awake. I can barely think about any of that.
Where is Eva? Where is Candace?
The second we break the edge of the crowd, he picks up his rant again.
“We never should have indulged this Solberg scum.” Father is almost purple with rage, angrier than I’ve ever seen him before. “This is what comes of mixing with other kingdoms. At home, the Haze would have worked properly. Tradition would have asserted itself.”
At home, we would’ve known immediately that Eva and I weren’t mates. There would’ve been weeks and months of experimentation to figure out why. We both would’ve been miserable.
