I felt so bad because the least I could do was give Mark some closure, to literally make him understand why I did not want to leave.
I did not even want to look at him anymore, not with the pain so clear on his face. But I could no look away either, because I was scared that it might be the last time we look at each like this—with so much longing and emotion.
“This isn't about him, Mark, I whispered, my voice barely holding together. “This is more about me; more about us. It’s about us facing the truth.”
“And what truth is that?” He shook his head, laughing bitterly, tears still threatening to spill from his eyes. “Please tell me. Please tell us, in fact.” He chuckled even more but without a hint of humor.
