SEBASTIAN
She stayed still
The words I’d just thrown out, sharp, defensive… stupid actually… were still hanging in the air like smoke from a gunshot I never meant to fire.
“Do you want to be pregnant?” I’d asked.
God. What kind of question was that? What do I expect from a twenty-year-old?
Dahlia stared at me like I’d just slapped her. Not physically… but in the heart. And the worst part was, I knew I’d hurt her before she even opened her mouth.
“Sebastian,” she whispered, hurt bleeding through her voice, “what’s going on with you?”
I dragged a hand through my hair and stared at the steering wheel like it held the answers to the universe.
What was going on with me?
Everything.
Nothing.
Too much.
The sight of her holding that pill, calmly, quietly, without saying a word, had snapped something sharp inside me. Something I didn’t even know I was holding together with cheap tape.
“It’s nothing,” I muttered.
