My eyes met hers; they held weapons that could end my life that instant.
I’d prefer that.
Death, though, seemed better than what I felt at the moment.
“Dahlia… wait!”
She didn’t even look back.
Not once.
Damn! She was going to run away. Run back into the cubicle she just crawled out from. She bolted down the hallway, her steps frantic, terrified, wounded… And I swear something inside me cracked wide open. I wouldn’t let her go this time.
I sprinted after her.
“Dahlia, please…stop!” I pleaded, ignoring the customers in the dining area when we passed it.
She pushed the front door open and ran into the cold air outside. I caught up to her just as she reached the sidewalk.
I didn’t touch her.
Couldn’t.
Her shoulders were shaking so violently I was scared that even a hand on her arm would break her.
“Sweetheart…” My voice came out raw. “Please. I can explain.”
She turned slowly… too slowly
