The word left my mouth before I even thought about it.
Alex blinked at me once… twice… then burst into a short, sharp laugh.
“Relax,” he scoffed, rolling his eyes. “It’s not a date. I have no intention of being seen romancing my enemy’s leftovers.”
The insult stung, even though I knew better than to let Alex’s words pierce me. I still believed that Alex mistook Sebastian for another person, by the way.
“I just need you as camouflage,” he continued. “One evening. Tomorrow. A few hours of sitting beside me like we’re… whatever.” His lips curled. “My father’s order. I can’t go alone. It’ll cause more noise than I need.”
I swallowed hard, jaw clenched.
“So you want to use me.”
“Obviously,” he said. “And in return, I’ll fix your… mess.”
“My mess?” I snapped.
“Is it mine?” He shrugged. “Your life. Your boyfriend. Your reputation. Whatever interpretation helps you sleep at night.”
