“I can’t just sit by and watch him do this to himself.” Ever since Rafael’s mother died, she had seen to it that the boy she took care of since he was in his nappies would be taken care of like her own son.

“Why are men so stupid?” Juanita mumbled as she rocked her baby to sleep while the three of them watch the men carry El Patrón to his suite of rooms. Their leader was so intoxicated that he was unaware he was begging Angelina to come back. Ramon winced when he began to shout orders. His words were too jumbled and slurred. Soon enough, Rafael was snoring. The sound faded when they disappeared from the ladies’ sight.
Her twin sister smirked. Lucinda would have liked to smile, but in a different circumstance, she would even laugh but she was too worried. “He is killing himself. We have to do something.”
