Chapter 4
She stopped herself short of rolling her eyes and returned her gaze to his face, taking in the dark bruises below his eyes that seemed to deepen as she stared. The tanned tone of his skin lost its color, becoming pale, and there was a visibly growing gauntness in his cheeks.
He looked unwell and seemed to be growing more so with every passing minute. She winced, guilt and concern adding to the emotions already twisting her stomach.
Anger hardened his features when she didn’t respond. He straightened, and his whole demeanor changed in an instant. A sickening smile curled his mouth, and that feverish stare bored into her through the camera disguised as a peephole.
Without warning, he punched his fist into the door with more strength than she would’ve given him credit. She’d be surprised if there weren’t a dent left from the impact. The harsh clang of the thick ring adorning his finger reverberated through the dark
