Breathing deeply to keep any more tears from falling, she leaned across the console, so she could reach the back of her head with her bound hands, and pulled a hidden bobby pin free. She’d learned long ago to always wear one for just such a scenario.
With smooth, practiced movements, she picked the lock and freed herself from the cuffs.
She didn’t have a plan as she unlocked the SUV, disabling the alarm, and got out, couldn’t think beyond the instinctive need to get away from the source of the pain making her feel like her heart had been carved out with a dull knife.
A cold, wet breeze ruffled her hair and seemed to sink into her bones as she stood alone in the dark. The moon had risen, the only interruption in an inky void of endless sky and water.
The masochistic pull in her chest didn’t care about her pain. I
