Chapter 24. Stay with Me
Dominic’s POV
Her skin was cold and clammy with sweat, pale as death: clutching the feeling to my chest that it was as if somebody had reached in, grabbed my heart right out of my chest, and forced me to watch as they stomped it into a pulp, trying to shake her awake. “Leila, come on, open your eyes, wake up, damn it!”
She did not answer. Panicking, I nudged her a little—just to bring her back from whatever was happening with her. But in my arms, she was pretty limp, lifeless.
I turned to the head maid, standing a bit of a distance away; her face creased with worry. “Get the doctor, now!” Saying that, my voice was brusque, but I did not care at that moment. Leila needed aid.
The head maid nodded quickly and made her way over to the telephone. “Yes, sir, at once,” she beeped.
I took Leila in my hands and lifted her. She felt so light in my hands that it was scary. Not a muscle in her body even moved as she lay close to me as if frozen.
