Alice was stunned to hear Sky's assessment. After a blink, she shook her head. "I'm not sad, Honey. You and your papa love me. That's more than enough."

"You're still happy even though Grandma doesn't love you?" Sky asked in surprise.

Alice shrugged. "Yeah. We can't force other people to like us."

"But Mama loves Grandma?"

Alice fell silent again. "She's my mother-in-law. I have to respect her."

"Oh, I understand now. Mama is kind to Grandma, not to get something in return, but because she is Uncle Ed's mother. Just like Papa Lucas and me."

Alice shook her head at that name. "Papa Lucas?"
