By the time Johnston knocked on Zane's door, it was already noon.
He questioned if the man was at home, considering he might be at work. Suddenly, a voice startled him for an instant.
"Johnston. What are you doing here?" Zane asked in a cold voice.
"Man, I really need to talk to you urgently. Trust me, you'll want to hear this," he urged Zane persuasively. There was a sigh followed by the sound of an electronic whir as the door unlocked and opened slightly. Johnston stepped through but encountered another barrier before him, which also clicked open at Zane's command. Once inside, he finally faced his host directly.
"Listen, Zane," Johnston started apologizing again, "I know our friendship became distant when I returned Becca to her mate.
