Chapter 4
The fire burned bright and wild, filling the air with smoke and burning flesh, and the echoes of a scream tore through the valley such that she thought she was the one standing on the pyre. She saw the men who stood arms crossed, watching as the fire consumed the woman in its flames. Then the woman screamed louder, not in pain or anguish but in anger and scorn.
“I curse you for your deed. I curse land and spouse
Friends, you shall turn from the other
Apart you shall break
Brother against brother—”
She raged as more wood was tossed on an already deadly flame. The two men that looked to be the orchestrator of the event stood apart from the onlookers. Their stance spoke of men of war who were immune to tears and indignation. The flames roared fiercely, the screaming slowed, then trickled and stopped, the flame flickered and died out, and the crowd dwindled but for two child
