Chapter 93. Left in the Dark

The soft caress of the wind on my skin felt heavenly. I stared down at the busy streets of the city below. It was Susie’s idea to sit and talk on the rooftop terrace.
“This tastes wonderful,” Susie hummed, taking another bite of the Victoria sponge cake. “I think she’d be able to make it as good as the one I had in London.”
“She did a good job,” I muttered after taking a bite of my own cake.
We both ate our cakes quietly, savoring the taste on our tongues. It tasted wonderful; I felt good—better than I had been the day before.
“When will Dad be back?” I had asked the question before but hoped the reply would be more specific than “I’m not sure.” It wasn’t.
“I don’t know yet, dear. Hopefully before the week is over.”
“Okay.”
She studied my face for a moment, put the piece of cake back on her plate, and cleared her throat.
