Chapter 56. Ghost
CYRUS
The sound of music engulfs the space as laughter and excitement hang in the air. The clouds have grown dark blue and the lamps have begun to glisten, turning the enclave into a golden-yellow shade.
Seated behind a food-filled table with Esos solely by my side, we stare at the merriment before us. The nobles and royals have gathered as a custom, to celebrate our marriage and coronation. I see many of them in shiny and pricey clothing, dancing in twos and threes, others sitting in groups and at round tables discussing, and laughing out loud.
“One would think they are happy about this union…” Esos begins, talking without looking at me. Her neck is stiffened and her poise exudes grace.
“Why wouldn’t they?” I wonder aloud, grabbing a chalice from the table to take a sip of wine.
“You will not eat or drink tonight, great Madurk.” Her words stop me. Without needing to explain herself, I drop the cup for if there is one thing I know, it is that this woman
