Vera threw herself into Lillian’s arms the moment she saw her, sobbing like she’d just found her lifeline.

“Mom, I went with Susan to Dance Class 3 to find her friend, and somehow Sis got hurt and now she’s in the hospital. She told Grandpa and Dad that I kicked her, but I didn’t even see her when I was there. How could I have possibly kicked her?”

Lillian’s face darkened instantly. “Alexander, Richard, you can’t just take Cassandra’s word for it and pin everything on Vera. She’s picked on her more than once, you all know that. Just last night, she slapped Vera and then got scolded by Mom. Clearly, she’s still bitter about it and now that she’s hurt herself somehow, she’s trying to blame Vera.”

Richard looked torn as he watched his wife and daughter. There was hesitation in his eyes.

He didn’t want to believe Vera would do such a thing, but the timing was way too convenient—Cassandra got hurt right when Vera went to Dance Class 3? That couldn’t be a coinciden
