“What?” I whispered, taking a step back as everything around me spun. Ruka was his beta? She was a warrior? Why… why did he hide that from me? My mind raced, trying to piece together the fragments of the truth I had just uncovered.

“Why… did you lie to me?” I demanded pulling myself away from him and looking into his eyes.

“I did not lie, I just… hid things I didn’t want you to find out,” Rasmus sighed running his hand through his hair. A habit he always did when he was tense.

“But why? Why must you make me a fool and… oh gosh… did that mean this whole marriage is just a sham?” My voice broke, the words feeling like shards of glass in my throat.

“Yes…” he whispered.

The room seemed to close in on me, the air thick and suffocating. My heart pounded in my chest. I could see the regret etched on his face, the furrow of his brow, the tight line of his lips. His eyes, usually so fierce and cold, now held a softness, a plea for under
