“You’re not the first mate I was meant to have,” his words echoed in my ear.

Getting a second mate was extremely rare. It almost never happened unless in rare cases. Hearing it happened to Zac was like a bomb, exploding in my ears.

I was his second mate.

Don’t know what to feel about that.

“Who was she?” I asked, trying to sound unbothered about it as possible. “Was it her husband who made her sick? Did they find evidence? Was he arrested?” I asked all at once, and realized how curious I was.

I cleared my throat and folded my arms. “I am just curious, that’s all.”

He smirked. “I know,” he answered. “But let’s leave it at that. I don’t want to bore you with my boring story.”

Then you shouldn’t have started it, I almost yelled out but that would be foolish of me. I had pushed him into spilling the truth.

She was his first mate.

I was the second.

Not chosen.
