“Uncle Pete just told me you hired your ex-husband,” Jared said the moment I walked into the living room. It was time to prepare dinner.

I eyed Uncle Pete. “Really?”

He was at the table, on his computer. There was a big home office/library in this house, but Uncle Pete mostly preferred working in the living room. His smile was a bit sheepish.

“Sorry. It kinda fell out when we were having a conversation.” Then he directed to Jared, “I thought you promised you wouldn’t tell her.”

Jared didn’t reply him. Instead, he kept his gaze on me. “Why would you hire your ex?”

“Technically, Uncle Pete hired him.”

“Because you gave the order.”

“Don’t make it sound like a military thing. I didn’t give any order. It was a request.”
