Shimma’s POV

“She’s Derry’s daughter. My best friend’s,” Mattias said, and I watched a kind of expression cross his face.

“What? Shimma? Is that you? Last time I saw you, you were little. How did you grow up so fast?” She paused, turning between me and Mattias.

“What happened?” she asked. “Mattias, she’s your best friend’s daughter. She’s still a child. Does Derrick know about this?” Mattias’s mother asked, concern and confusion in her voice, as if it were taboo to fall in love with your best friend’s daughter.

“Yes, he knows. As a matter of fact, we both love each other, and that is what matters. Also, I didn’t mean to bring it up here, but since you mentioned Derrick, my best friend, I want to let you know that he is…” Mattias paused, his eyes meeting mine. I could feel my heart racing. He had to tell them, but I didn’t want to hear it. But I had to.

“He’s late,” Mattias said, dropping his gaze downward. Mattias’s mum quickly dropped her spoon,
