“Yeah, you definitely don’t give off that vibe,” Ace said.
Tai gave him a look, and he cracked a grin.
“Shut up,” she said. “I trust Raiden. That’s it. You’re making me feel things that I’ve never felt before, and I don’t like it.”
“But you do—you do like it,” Ace said gently. “And that scares you, doesn’t it?”
Tai sighed and looked at Ace’s hand that was still on her knee. “The people I get close to always end up getting hurt, and it’s always my fault.”
“I was nearly killed and ended up in a coma. If I can get over that, I can get over anything you’ll do to me.”
“Don’t joke about that,” Tai said sharply, surprising herself. The thought of Ace dying made a bubble of anger form within her. “Don’t joke about your life, especially when you’re sitting in the car with me. You don’t know what I’m capable of.”
There was a flicker of fear in Tai’s eye. She was scared of herself.
