Chapter 33. She’s Pregnant

I watched Martha slip quietly out of the kitchen, making her way to the front door and disappearing into the night with nary a backwards glance.
A pang of sadness hit me at her absence, but I knew we both had to get our heads on straight before facing Ava.
Sighing heavily, I made my way back to the living room and plopped down on the couch, trying my best to look like I’d been watching TV this whole time.
I flicked on the flat screen and settled in, hoping my flustered appearance could be chalked up to a suspenseful movie scene.
Before long, I heard the sound of a car pulling up outside, followed by the slamming of doors and the click of high heels on the pavement.
My heart rate kicked up a notch as I heard the front door open and close, followed by the sound of feminine voices drifting down the hall.
“Hey Dad,” Ava called out, her voice taking on a slightly forced cheerfulness that set my nerves on edge. “We’re home.”
