“Elena,” I said, voice low, “did Ava say anything? About me?”
Elena frowned, still close, hands on my chest. “No. Why? She’s just… quiet today.”
I nodded, trying to shake the unease. “She seemed pissed.”
Elena’s brow creased. “She’s a teenager. Probably fighting with Martha again. You know how they get it.”
“Yeah,” I said, but my gut didn’t buy it. Ava’s eyes had been too sharp, too knowing.
Elena touched my jaw, pulling me back. “Hey. We’re having a baby. Focus on that.”
I forced a smile, kissed her again, slower this time, letting the news sink in. A son. My blood. It lit something deep, primal, a pride I couldn’t shake even with the worry nagging at me.
I’d keep them both, Elena, my boy. Whatever Ava thought she knew, I’d handle it.
