Chapter 258
Mason’s POV
The small container hit the floor with a clatter that seemed louder than it should have. My heart nearly stopped as Layla turned her gaze toward me.
Her eyebrows lifted in curiosity, and she began walking toward where I stood.
“What was that sound?” she asked, her voice light but suspicious.
I panicked. My mind raced for an explanation. “It was, uh, just the salt container,” I blurted, trying to sound casual.
Her steps didn’t falter. She kept coming closer, her eyes locked on me as if she were trying to read my every move. My pulse quickened. I couldn’t let her see what had really fallen…the small vial that could ruin everything.
As she approached, I quickly kicked the vial under the table, out of sight. My movements were hurried but precise, and I hoped she didn’t notice. Bending down, I grabbed the actual salt container from the count
