Mason’s POV
I turned to her, trying to push my guilt aside. “Yeah, I’m fine,” I said, though my voice wavered slightly. “Just a lot on my plate right now.”
She nodded slowly, her eyes searching mine. “Well, I hope things get better for you soon,” she said. “You’re a good person, Mason. I know that.”
Her words were like a dagger to my heart. She thought I was a good person. But I didn’t feel like one. Not anymore.
As she finished her breakfast, I tried to come up with a plan. I needed another opportunity to complete the task. But how? And when? The unknown man wouldn’t care about my excuses. If I didn’t deliver, the consequences would be devastating.
My mind was a whirlwind of fear and desperation as I watched Layla finish the last bite of her food, completely unaware of the pain inside me.
