Dani’s POV

I can’t stay here. They might come back.

The road wasn’t far, just beyond the edge of the forest. I stumbled toward it, my breath coming in ragged gasps as I pushed through the undergrowth. 

When I finally emerged, the sight of the empty road was both a relief and a new challenge.

I needed help, but who would stop for a disheveled, bruised man in the middle of nowhere?

I raised my hand, waving weakly as the first car sped past without slowing. My heart sank, but I didn’t give up. I kept walking along the road, my arm raised every time a vehicle approached.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, a small, dusty car pulled over. The driver’s window rolled down, and I was greeted by the sight of a young woman with kind eyes and a cautious expression.

“Are you okay?” she asked, her voice laced with concern.
