Maddy’s POV
“I don’t know,” he had admitted, running a hand through his hair. “She... she was on the rooftop, Maddie. The doctors think she jumped.”
“Jumped?” I had echoed, the word feeling foreign and wrong in my mouth. “No. No, Layla wouldn’t do that.”
He had looked at me, his eyes filled with doubt and pain.
“The doctors said she’s lost her memory. Maddie, they don’t know if she’ll ever fully recover. And... They told me not to push her. If she doesn’t remember someone, we’re supposed to say we’re just friends.”
Those words had hit me like a punch to the gut. The thought of Layla not recognizing me…of my best friend looking at me like a stranger…was almost too much to bear.
But I nodded, promising to follow the doctor’s instructions, even as my heart broke at the possibility.
