Jason’s POV
The soft reflection of her bedside lamp spilled into the hallway, and I could hear the faint sound of her humming.
My heart clenched at the sound. She was so peaceful, so content. Did I really want to risk shattering that by bringing up the possibility of her past?
I stood there for a moment, wrestling with my thoughts. Finally, I knocked lightly on the doorframe.
“Jason?” her voice called out softly. “Is that you?”
“Yeah,” I replied, stepping into the room. She was sitting on the edge of the bed, brushing her hair, the strands gleaming in the light. She looked up at me with a smile that made my chest ache.
“Couldn’t sleep?” she asked, tilting her head slightly.
I shrugged, leaning against the doorframe. “Something like that. Just... thinking.”
“About what?” she asked, her tone curious.
