Maxine’s POV

I nodded, pushing them closer to me. "Sure." I replied. "I can do them."

When Liam finally excused himself from Varis and approached my desk with purposeful strides, my heart skipped a beat. His expression was grave yet determined, a reflection of the turmoil we were all feeling.

The door opened and Kris walked into the room. I could tell from his body language that he was angry. "Liam, we have to strike back." He snapped.

"Maxine," he began quietly, "I'll be back in a few minutes."

I nodded.

"It's because they don't fear us that they can do this. It's been years but ever since that new Mayor got into position, he's been acting anyhow!" Kris snapped.

It surprised me. I had always known him as the cool, fun guy. Out of everyone, Varis was the one I had most expected to react like this.

"Let's go talk about this in my office." Liam said, guiding Kris out of the office. I watched them curiously as they left.<
