Chapter 29
It was a lie. I could see the death around him, laughing at my innocence in thinking that he would still take the trouble to avoid thinking, when she was already so close. Edward's eyes delivered all the lie, avoiding finding mine, wanting to prevent me from seeing the cry for help they hid. Edward put one of the strands of his hair behind his ear, still watching people in front of us, watching life unfold quietly right before his eyes.
"It's good not to think about her," I replied with a smile. Edward didn't turn his head. He didn't draw a reaction. Because it was a lie. There was nothing but death in his head, nothing but the desire to be somewhere else. "We should think that my classes are almost over for sure, and it would be important for me to get a job, just so I don't have to mess with my parents' money."
