Chapter 25
Hours later, after the evening had turned to dusk, Winston had been doctored up and was sleeping like a babe. A chicken had been caught, plucked, and roasted. They lay lazily around a campfire behind the Macon’s property. Victoria stared at the flames as they danced and flicked in the humid night air.
Her belly was full, but she was far from relaxed. Her heart felt so heavy, and her body ached for something she could not name. Garrison was flat on his back, eyes gazing up towards the sky. A piece of straw dangled from the corner of his lips. She needed to get her mind away from where she was right now. She repositioned her body so that her legs were crossed under her skirt.
“Tell me about your grandmother,” she asked softly.
“Come lay beside me,” he said, turning to his die so that he would be lying towards the fire.
She didn’t think. She immediately got up and went to him. His arm circled her body. The heat he generated in her body was hotter than the fire.
