Chapter 37

I blink as if that might fix my eyesight. Because it must be a trick of the light. Or a trick of the dark, I guess, considering there are no street lamps illuminating the churchyard.

Nope. It's still there. Still watching me.

But that doesn't mean anything. I'm not crazy, and I know it's only a dog. Just a stray dog. My curtains are wide open because, though I noticed it getting darker earlier and switched my bedroom light on, I didn't realize just how dark it'd become. I should've drawn the curtains, and when I didn't, the light attracted the dog. It's not looking at me, it just appears that way.

It's a coincidence. A creepy one, for sure, but a coincidence all the same. I know that. Iris and Val have just gotten into my head today.

I'm startled from my thoughts by a sharp rap on the door, and I drop the book I'm holding onto the floor. It whacks against the chest of drawers with an audible bang, and I curse before I call out, "Just a second!"
