Chapter 39
Elijah's words echo around my head all night, and I barely get a wink of sleep. The look on his face when he'd said it... it was alien on his usually pleasant features. And the cruelness in his tone as he said the one thing he knew would truly hurt me...
I have no idea where it came from, and I'm trying to convince myself it was just because he was exhausted... but even then, it's so unlike him.
But screw him. He probably feels bad about it, too, and will apologize to me today. Until he does, though, I'm not speaking to him.
At around ten, Iris knocks on my bedroom door to ask if I want to join them at church. Obviously, I declined. If there's anything I desire less than being stuck in the cottage with Iris, it's being stuck in a church pew with Iris. No, thank you. Plus, it'll be even worse, considering the tension between Eli and me today. I'd rather stay home feeling sorry for myself.
