"Kaden," I whispered softly as we stood in the elevator, the silence stretching on. My hand was firmly clasped in his. He turned to me, a confused look crossing his face. “Do you really have to fire Johnny?” I asked.

“Yeah. He clearly dropped the ball on his responsibilities,” he replied.

“Couldn’t you think about giving him a warning or maybe a suspension instead?” I suggested gently, hoping to sway his decision.

“Listen, princess. He’s responsible for the safety of the residents, and he’s supposed to be overseeing tonight’s shift. It’s ridiculous that he didn’t notice one of his team members has lost it. The guy who attacked you wasn’t even supposed to be checking your floor tonight,” he explained.
