Chapter 60. Apologize
Calista’s POV
Mr. Halpert arched an eyebrow, tapping his fingers against the clipboard. “The market’s changing, Miss Sinclair. Costs are rising everywhere,” he stated, his tone clipped with a weary authority.
“But a 25% increase?” I asked, my heart sinking with nerves. “That’s more than I can afford on my current salary. I’ve been a reliable tenant for years. Isn’t there any way we can negotiate?” I lied.
He sighed heavily, his brow furrowing but I could see in his eyes that he understood me. “That’s true. No one has rented this place before, so I appreciate your interest,” he admitted gruffly. “I suppose it’s suitable for a student like yourself…”
“Thank you, Mr. Halpert,” I replied, trying to temper the hope in my voice. “It’s just that such a sudden increase is impossible for me to manage on short notice. I’m willing to find a solution, perhaps a smaller increase over time?” I proposed softly, hoping for a favorable response.
