I stood outside the ICU for a long moment after leaving Rhodes’s office, trying to compose myself. Trying to figure out how to face Lake knowing what I now knew—or what I suspected. The paternity test wouldn’t come back for another twenty-four hours, but the pieces were already falling into place in my mind with terrible clarity.
