Chapter 68
Lake POV
I took it, letting him pull me to my feet. His thumb traced over my knuckles in a gesture that was becoming familiar, comforting.
“Ready,” I confirmed.
We walked to the door together. I reached for the handle, intending to say something—what, I wasn’t sure. Maybe thank you, or that was nice, or please don’t think this means I’m ready for everything.
But I never got the chance.
The door flew open from the outside, and I found myself face-to-face with Ollie.
Except he wasn’t looking at me. His eyes were unfocused with sleep, his small body swaying slightly as he clutched Mr. Hoppy to his chest. He’d clearly just woken up, disoriented and searching for something.
For me, I realized. He was searching for me.
“Mama?” he called out, his voice small and worried as he peered into the hallway. He didn’t even see me standing right in front of him.
“Mama?”
He turned away, heading to the next door down the hall. I watch
