Thomas approached and touched his hand gently.

The servant was dismissed, leaving him in a anguish that consumed him.
Helena couldn't understand what Evy and the other women were saying; her brain was only processing the intense pain in her abdomen. At first, it was a dull ache that barely concerned her, but a few minutes later, her water broke, and the women told her it was time. She screamed, twisting on the bed; the pain became so intense she felt she couldn't go on. The intervals were getting shorter; her heart raced, and she struggled to breathe.
Every part of her body seemed to burn; all she could think about was the pain starting in her lower back and running through her abdomen, as if it were stabbing her. Never in her life had she felt such pain.
