As soon as those words left Benson’s mouth, everything inside me went still. I opened my lips to speak, but nothing—absolutely nothing—came out. It was as if every word I knew had abandoned me.

“So… I guess I’ll be off then,” he said quietly.

All I could do was nod. He took the hint and excused himself, leaving the office in a silence that suddenly felt too heavy.
