Chapter 61. Unrelenting Heart
“Mommy, I’m scared. Who is he?”
“It’s fine, Cath. He is just a former friend of mine. We will be okay.” I pulled Catherine against my side, brushing her arm fast to calm her down.
I saw Caden glance back at us from the passenger seat of his car. There was so much pain in his eyes—and darkness—that made me feel scared and nervous. Catherine’s werewolf instinct was as powerful as mine, and I knew she also felt that strange tension between Caden and me. I winced as the throbbing ache in my head got worse and worse.
“But where are we going? The program had already started, Mom. I promise Lisa…” Catherine pouted, disappointed in our abrupt departure, and I glared menacingly at Caden, despising him even more for causing her distress. I saw the guilt on his face, though. But he shifted on his seat and focused on the road, ignoring the flames of my anger.
