Caden remained alert. It took him a whole minute before I saw his shoulders relax until the tension in his body disappeared. “Nothing, Giselle,” he murmured, but his eyes were still sharp. “Just get inside and let the maids help you take care of Cath. I need you in my study room.”

I felt his hand on the small of my back as he led me up the stairs. I anxiously looked into his eyes but my worries faded when Caden smiled at me reassuringly, as if telling me that he got it. We were all safe under his watch.

And for the first time in several years, a part of me wanted to believe in him—wanted to trust Caden again. Honestly, it was like putting myself on the edge of a precipice, hoping that Caden would never let go of my hand. It was terrifying.
