That can’t be a mere coincidence, can it?
Could it be that they are lying? If Augustus had been poisoned, there is no way he could have been the one who ordered the attack on Layla, which leaves me with two theories, but they wouldn't want the journal because it was of no use to them.

“No, but you can talk to the Beta. I will take you to the pack house.”
