Zavian knelt in front of the tree, covering its lower branches with decorations. “Recently, on my own.” His tone was vague.
Emmeline couldn’t read his emotions from it. She didn’t want to press him, so she kept silent.
It was only a matter of seconds until he added quietly, “I usually spent Christmas with my family like everyone else. Sometimes, we visited Yuna’s family with our daughter. When the relationship between me and her deteriorated, I preferred being alone.”
Her side of the tree was filled with decorations, so Emmeline chose her next spot right next to Zavian standing while he remained seated.
“I gave her this yacht for her seventh birthday,” he continued, his voice taking on a wistful quality. “I brought her to decorate it for Christmas once, and that was my happiest time. I promised her we would come every year to have a special celebration for us, a date between a father and his daughter, but...” He trailed off, refusing to voice the painful part
