Emmeline’s grip on Minnie’s hand loosened and her chest tightened. Still, she forced herself to speak, even though her words felt desperate. “Their relationship is beyond saving, Minnie. Just like mine with Richard. Your advice won’t work on Mr. Blackthorn.”

Minnie crossed her arms and leaned forward slightly with her voice dropping to a sly tone. “I’m thinking of having her give him an aphrodisiac.”

The words hit Emmeline like a thunderbolt. Her breath caught in her throat, and for a moment, she forgot how to breathe.

Minnie’s triumphant smile only deepened her panic. “What do you think, Emmeline?”
